About SMDB

The Swedish Media Database (SMDB) is a search service for the audiovisual collections at the National Library of Sweden (KB). The database contains information about TV, radio, video, movies presented in theaters, CDs, and multimedia.

The SMDB covers most Swedish broadcasts and publications since 1979, but also contains older material. You can find information about 8 million recorded hours in the SMDB.

The SMDB is only available in Swedish. If you have any questions about the National Library’s audiovisual collections and how to search, contact our research service.

Access the collections

As a researcher you have access to the National Library’s audiovisual collections. Others will also be able to benefit from your results. You can watch and listen to our collections if you are

  • writing a university-level paper or thesis
  • an author or journalist
  • doing research for artistic activities.

When your application is approved you can order materials from the SMDB. You can access your ordered material either at the National Library in Humlegården in Stockholm or as an interlibrary loan at one of the college and university libraries (in Sweden, Norway and Denmark) with which we cooperate.

Ordering material is free. We will notify you when your orders are ready for retrieval.

You can reserve a private media room in our Humlegården premises. If you have co-workers, you can reserve a group room.
