After losing the top of her ring finger in an accident, Iris moves to a port town where she shares a room with a sailor. He works at night and sleeps while she is out in the day. She soon gets a job as an assistant to a preserver and while being intrigued by the sailor, whom she only knows through the things left in their shared room, Iris gradually becomes engaged in a disturbing love affair with her enigmatic boss.
