The early 1970's miners' strike in Harlan County caused by bad working conditions and the minimum wages paid for the dangerous work in the mines. Ruby, the wife of a miner who's fired for protesting against the dangerous working conditions, becomes involved in the strike and in organising other miners' wives to support their men.
