In Pictures of Innocence, art historian Anne Higonnet traces the visual representation of childhood, and argues that while images of childhood were once the epitome of nocence, they are now open to much wider, more contentious interpretations. Magnus Hirschfeld - Considered the "Einstein of Sex" for his pioneering work in the field of sexology, German-Jewish physician Magnus Hirschfeld is known for being both a sexual reformer and a sexual scientist. He founded the first gay political group in history in 1897 and opened the world's first Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin in 1919. Hirschfeld gained worldwide recognition for his work, but was the subject of frequent attacks by the political right in Germany. The Nazis plundered his Institute in 1933 and much of his life's work was destroyed. Hirschfeld died in exile in 1935; efforts to re-establish his Institute continue today.
