Artistic influences feature heavily in Christian LaCroix's designs. In fact, the founder of the French fashion house originally wanted to be a museum curator, and studied art history at the Sorbonne. Denim has been popular for decades, favoured for it's durability as well as its adaptability in the fashion world. Jeans came to represent rebellion, freedom and youth culture during the 50's and 60's, and were made even more popular by Hollywood idols like James Dean. Elvis Presley was another icon of the time; although his appeal had a lot more to do with his stage presence and pretty-boy looks than his clothes, which were described as country-meets-rock 'n' roll and as he gained weight during the 70's, gave way to sequined jumpsuits!
